At YouTube’s exclusive “Big Artists, Small Room” event, held in collaboration with Takwene at Cairo Jazz Club 610, we caught up with Lege-Cy to talk about performing in a smaller venue and the first live performance of his newly released track ‘Amara’. For Lege-Cy, that meant performing in front of a crowd that felt more like his own circle, with many of the people in the room already familiar to him. Rather than making direct eye contact with the crowd, Lege-Cy says he usually looks towards the end of the room while performing. The performance also marked the first time he performed “Amara” live, just days after its release. Lege-Cy spoke about the medley performed during the night, a format he has always enjoyed and wanted to create himself. Bringing together verses from different songs, the medley draws from a tradition already familiar in Egyptian music, with artists like Amr Diab and Tamer Ashour having used the format in their performances. 28 years ago, September 26, 1998, Cheb Khaled, Rachid Taha, and Faudel came together at Paris’s Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy for 1, 2, 3 Soleil, a landmark concert celebrating Raï and its place in Algerian musical culture. Bringing three generations of artists onto one stage, the performance paired Khaled and Taha’s established careers with Faudel’s emergence as one of the genre’s next major voices. More than a meeting of three celebrated names, it captured a moment when Algerian music and the diaspora’s cultural presence in France were becoming increasingly visible. Khaled had recently reached a new level of international recognition with ‘Aïcha’, while Taha’s version of ‘Ya Rayah’ had become one of his defining recordings. Faudel, meanwhile, represented a younger generation carrying Raï forward. The American rapper once again voiced his support for Palestine during his latest appearance, stressing that Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have not been forgotten and that everyone deserves freedom, safety and peace. Macklemore has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine, previously releasing ‘Hind’s Hall’ in solidarity with Gaza.
